
Professor Thirumala Govender is Professor of Pharmacy in the Discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences and serves as the Head of the Drug Delivery Research Group at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa. She plays a key role in shaping pharmaceutical research and policy through her ministerial appointment on the Board of the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and her position as Member of the Pharmaceutical and Analytical Committee at the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), where she contributes to the regulatory evaluation of new medicines. Prof. Govender has also held leadership roles as Vice Chair of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa and Moderator for the SAPC Pharmaceutics professional examinations for foreign-trained graduates. Her expertise was further recognized through her invitation to serve as an Editorial Board Member for the prestigious Journal of Controlled Release, a Q1-ranked and globally leading journal in Pharmaceutics.
Prof. Govender’s academic journey is marked by excellence and distinction. After earning her Master of Pharmacy degree cum laude, she was awarded the highly prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship, enabling her to complete a PhD at the University of Nottingham (UK). Her research has since been at the forefront of pharmaceutical innovation, focusing on the design, development, and characterization of advanced drug delivery systems. Her recent work on novel materials and smart antibiotic nano drug delivery systems to combat MRSA infections has positioned her research unit among the global leaders in this field. Competing with leading researchers worldwide, she is pioneering cutting-edge nanotechnology approaches to design “intelligent” pharmaceutical materials and next-generation nano drug delivery systems, with the goal of enhancing infection treatments and overcoming antibiotic resistance.
Prof. Govender’s impact is further demonstrated through her exceptional research credentials. As a B2-rated scientist by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF), she has achieved an impressive h-index of 46 (Scopus) and 53 (Google Scholar), with over 7000 and 9500 citations, respectively. She has authored 167 high-impact publications in leading international journals, including multiple contributions to Q1/Top 10 journals in pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, and bioengineering. Notably, her work in the Journal of Controlled Release has received over 1,300 citations, with 20 other publications surpassing 100 citations. As a recognized innovator, she is also a co-inventor on two PCT patent applications, and her contributions have been showcased at over 150 national and international conferences.
Her dedication to excellence in both research and education has earned her multiple prestigious national awards from the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa, including the Johnson & Johnson Distinguished Teacher Award, the Adcock Ingram Award, and the Boehringer Ingelheim Award for outstanding research publications in Pharmaceutics. She has successfully secured highly competitive research grants and scholarships from the UK Commonwealth Association, NRF, and MRC, enabling her to mentor and supervise numerous Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral researchers—many of whom have graduated with distinction and achieved significant national and international recognition.
Prof. Govender’s expertise and leadership are recognized on a global scale. She is frequently invited as a reviewer for top-ranking international journals, is an invited author for several review articles and book chapters in Q1 publications, and is an invited research grants reviewer by international research organisations, including the European Union. Her insights are sought by reputable universities worldwide, where she has served as a visiting scientist, external examiner, guest lecturer, and advisor on nanotechnology curriculum development. Additionally, local and international pharmaceutical companies have invited her to consult on drug delivery strategies. She has been honored as a plenary speaker at major international symposia and has chaired sessions at global conferences. Additionally, she has been invited by seven universities across Africa to provide specialized training in nanotechnology research for drug delivery, further solidifying her role as a trailblazer in pharmaceutical sciences on the continent.
Most recently, she was elected as a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), a prestigious honor recognizing distinguished scientists who have made significant contributions to science for the betterment of society. She also serves as a Member of the UKZN Animal Research and Ethics Committee (AREC) and has previously held leadership roles as Chair of the UKZN College of Health Sciences Women in Leadership and Leverage Committee (WILL) and Head of the UKZN School of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. She remains a member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa and continues to drive innovation, mentorship, and scientific excellence.
