Dr. Deanne Johnston is a senior lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. With more than a decade of experience in academia and having worked at the South African Pharmacy Council, she is passionate about advancing pharmaceutical education in South Africa. Her hard work and dedication were recognised when she was awarded the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 2019 at the 40th Academy of Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa Conference.
Deanne completed her PhD in 2018 at the University of the Witwatersrand and her thesis is entitled “Development of a Sustainable Student-run Clinic Serving the Homeless of the Inner City”. This mixed method study that approached the sustainability of services to underserved communities from multiple angles and used a grounded theory approach to develop a framework to support the clinic.
With a wealth of experience in teaching pharmaceutics, clinical pharmacy, pharmacotherapy and pharmacy practice Dr Johnston has supervised and mentored numerous students in achieving their postgraduate qualifications. She has served on local, national and international committees. She has twelve publications in accredited journals and has presented her research at nine local and international conferences.
